Division II Dave Williams Award presented by Golf Pride Grips Finalists Announced Print

FORT WORTH, Texas – Division II finalists for the Dave Williams Award presented by Golf Pride Grips have been announced by the GCAA. The Williams Award honors the national coach of the year in Division II men’s golf. Williams Award and regional coach of the year recipients will be announced June 5.

The five finalists are TL Brown of California Baptist, Lynn’s Andrew Danna, Steve Fell of West Florida, Central Missouri’s Tim Poe, and Newberry’s Howard Vroon. If a team wins the NCAA Championship and its coach was not previously named a finalist for the Dave Williams Award that coach will be added for coach of the year consideration.

Brown led California Baptist to four victories this season, including the NCAA West/South Central Regional. The Lancers were runner-up twice and posted nine top four finishes in 12 events. Brown was also a Williams Award finalist last season while at Chico State.

A Williams Award finalist last season, Danna’s Lynn squad posted five victories in 2016-17. The Fighting Knights finished in the top five in all 12 events. Danna was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year for the second stright season.

The Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year, Fell’s West Florida charges have won eigtht of 10 tournaments. Their other two finishes were runner-up and third. The current No. 1 ranked team in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, the Argonaughts have held the top spot five straight weeks.

A member of the GCAA Hall of Fame, Poe’s Central Missouri squad won five tournements this season. The Mules placed in the top five in four additional events. Poe previously received the 2010 Division II Williams Award.

Vroon led Newberry to its first NCAA Division II National Championship appearance since 2011. The Wolves won two tournaments this season. They also recorded three runner-up finishes. Newberry placed in the top five in eight of 10 events.
