NORMAN, Okla. - Former CSU Stanislaus men's golf coach Jim Hanny has been named recipient of the GCAA Honor Award. Hanny will receive the award at the GCAA Hall of Fame Banquet Dec. 6 at the Tropicana Las Vegas. The Honor Award is presented annually to a member of the GCAA Hall of Fame who is retired from coaching and has made significant contributions to the game of golf.

During his 42 years at CSU Stanislaus, Hanny served as athletics director, chairman of physical education and coached basketball, golf, track & field, cross country and baseball. He came to the school in 1966, when he served as the head coach of the first Warrior men?s basketball team. Hanny's career as golf coach spanned participation in both Division III and Division II.

Under his guidance, the Warriors only missed the NCAA tournament twice since 1976. Hanny led his men?s golf teams to 12 NCAA Division III national championships in 14 appearances in the 70s and 80s. Since 1990, CSUS?s first year as a Division II program, Hanny led the golf team to nine top-five national finishes. During a five-year span from 2000-2004, the Warriors finish fourth or better at the National Championship tournament. He also coached more than 90 All-American players.

A 1992 inductee into the GCAA Hall of Fame, Hanny is an eight-time GCAA National Coach of the Year and earned Region/District Coach of the Year recognition on 22 and conference coach of the year on eight occasions. He is also a member of the University of Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame, CSU Stanislaus Hall of Fame, Alliance (Ohio) High School Hall of Fame and Sports of Stanislaus Hall of Fame. The walkway leading up to the CSU Stanislaus basketball arena was named Hanny Way in his honor.

Hanny founded and has directed the George Buzzini, Sr.-Stanislaus Invitational Golf Tournament, now in its 37th year, which features a field of more than 20 teams from the region. The tournament was recently renamed the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational.

In addition to coaching responsibilities, Hanny also served the GCAA as a speaker at its national conference in 1989. He was also a member of the GCAA All-America Scholar selection committee and served on district advisory committees.
