Sweden Holds Lead Halfway Through 2006 Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship
 

Tim Sluiter of The Netherlands leads individual competition 


TOYOTA CITY, Japan - Sweden nearly matched its first round performance with a 9-under 207 on Wednesday to hold a three-stroke lead over Chinese Taipei and Norway (-16) at the 2006 Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship at the Chukyo Golf Club Ishino Course in Toyota City, Aichi-Prefecture, Japan. Japan checked in fourth at 14-under, doubling up three teams tied for fifth at 7-under - Argentina, The Netherlands and USA. In the individual competition, Tim Sluiter of The Netherlands missed the course record set last year by America's Erik Flores by a single shot, shooting a 65 to bring his two day total to 136 (-8), a single stroke ahead of Sweden's Jesper Kennegard (-7).

England fired an 8-under 208 to bring its tournament total to minus-4 while Canada (-3) and Korea (-) rounded out the teams at or below par. The teams in the black were New Zealand (+2), South Africa (+4), Colombia (+5), Venezuela (+10) and Mexico (+19).

Trailing the top two individual competitors are five golfer tied for third at 6-under - Sweden's Bjorn Akesson, Pan Fu-Chiang and Lui Yu Chun of Chinese Taipei, Norway's Anders Kristiansen and Shunsuke Sonoda of Japan. Following by one stroke and tying for eighth were Norway's Are Friestad and Marius Thorp, Esteban Martinez of Argentina and America's Kyle Stanley.

The other American competitors - Jordan Cox, Hudson Swafford and Alex Volpenhein - shot 75, 72 and 68, respectively. Cox and Volpenhein are now tied for 32nd at 146 (+2) with Swafford a stroke behind at 3-over.

Round three tees off Thursday morning with the forecast calling for storms beginning around mid-day.
