AUTHOR: Alex Gelman
Carlsbad, Calif.- It was a beautiful day at the Omni La Costa Resort for the second round of the GCAA Summer Series, presented by the John T. Reis Foundation.
David Timmins, from Brigham Young University, who was 2-under entering the day, shot a 7-under 65 on Wednesday, giving himself a four-stroke lead heading into the final round on Thursday.
Timmins who was bogey-free on Wednesday, shot a 32 on the front-nine and a 33 on the back-nine.
“I just tried to keep it as simple as I could. I think I hit every green in regulation. That makes it really easy when you are rolling a putt or two. I just stuck to my gameplan and try to keep it one shot at a time.” Timmins said following his round on Wednesday.
Timmins, who had been looking forward to playing with his BYU teammate Brock Goyen, will get his wish on Thursday in the final round. Goyen, who was tied for the lead after the first round, shot 1-over 73 on Wednesday and is in third place.
The Avrit brothers played well on Wednesday. Owen Avrit, from University of Oregon, shot 3-under 69 on Tuesday and is 5-under for the tournament and currently in second place. Owen’s brother, Jack, who plays at Santa Clara University, shot 5-under 67 on Wednesday and is 2-under for the tournament, tied for fourth, seven shots back of the lead.
“Everything was solid today. I drove it well, hit my irons solid, putted alright…just a pretty clean round. I don’t know what he (Jack) had for breakfast, but I had some good eggs,” Owen Avrit said post-round on Wednesday.
Owen Avrit, currently in second, is four shots back of the lead heading into the final round on Thursday.
“I wanna go out tomorrow and have a good time. I just want to enjoy myself, stay relaxed, and make a few birdies here and there,” Owen Avrit said.
Timmins, Avrit, and Goyen are set to tee off at 10:40 a.m. PT on Thursday.
