Palmer Cup :: Haack Named Coach

March 2, 2002

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Georgia men's golf coach, Chris Haack has been named coach of the 2002 U.S. Palmer Cup Team, by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), president Mark Simpson announced today.

Haack will lead the eight members of Team USA against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland in the match-play event to be held July 8-12 at Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.

"Anytime you represent your country in any event, it is obviously very exciting," said Haack.

In his five seasons at Georgia, Haack has guided the Bulldogs to the program's first national championship and three Southeastern Conference crowns while bolstering UGA's national powerhouse image.

"We are very excited to have Chris leading the Palmer Cup team this summer," said Simpson. "This competition comprises players of the very highest quality in college golf, and certainly we have a coach to match the quality of those players."

Three of Haack's former players have played in previous Palmer Cup matches, including Nick Cassini (2000, 2001), Erik Compton (2001) and Michael Morrison (1999).

"Each time they (former players) have came back and told me what an incredible event the Palmer Cup is, and how fun it is to team-up with some of the guys they have been rivals with over the years," Haack said.

Many of golf's young stars have represented their country in the Palmer Cup since 1997, including Luke Donald (England), J.J. Henry (U.S.), Charles Howell III (U.S.), Matt Kuchar (U.S.), Bryce Molder (U.S.) and Rory Sabbatini (England).

The U.S. leads GB&I in the series, 3-1-1.
