USA and Europe Tied After Day One of Palmer Cup Presented by Monster

Ca?izares breaks two Palmer Cup record

MOSEL, Wis.?

The United States and Europe remain tied - six points apiece - after the first day of action at the Palmer Cup presented by Monster at Whistling Straits The Irish. Team Europe claimed the day?s final two matches - both 3 and 1 victories - to force the tie.

Alejandro Ca?izares of Spain set two Palmer Cup records, setting new marks in career wins and team points won with eight of each.

The United States took an early lead when John Holmes and Spencer Levin claimed the Palmer Cup?s opening match, defeating Rhys Davies and Steve Tiley, 6 and 4. Holmes carded two eagles during the round while he and Levin birdied three holes each. It was the only match that was completed prior to the 50-minute delay.

Europe would claim the next two matches - which stood at dormie before the delay. Scott Jamieson and David Skinns downed Matt Every and Matthew Rosenfeld, 3 and 2, in a match that Skinns claimed seven birdies. Ca?izares and Pablo Martin would win Europe?s second match of the round when they won five straight holes to erase a two-hole deficit and defeat Jeff Overton and Michael Putnam, 3 and 2.

Team USA would win the final match of the round to bring the opening round to a 2-2 tie. Roberto Castro birdied No. 17 to extend the match to the 18th hole and Kalle Edberg and Alex Nor?n conceded Ryan Blaum?s one-foot birdie putt to give the Americans the win.

After entering the round tied at two, the United States won the first two singles matches of the second round. Matt Every won his first Palmer Cup match in six tries won he carded five birdies and an eagle to defeat David Skinns, 4 and 2. Michael Putnam pushed the U.S. lead to two points when he downed Scott Jamieson, 5 and 4. The two sides halved the next match when Team USA?s Spencer Levin battled back from a three-hole deficit and birdied the final hole in his match with Rhys Davies. The Americans claimed their final win of the day when John Holmes beat Steve Tiley, 3 and 2.

Alex Nor?n would card Europe?s first singles victory when he downed Ryan Blaum, 5 and 4, in a match he lead from the first hole. The two sides halved for the second time of the round when Jeff Overton birdied No. 18 to pull even with Spain?s Pablo Martin. Europe won the final two matches of the day with a pair of 3 and 1 victories - Ca?izares recorded his record breaking match versus Matthew Rosenfeld and Kalle Edberg?s triumph over Roberto Castro in which he claimed the final three holes.
