Hyland to Lead USA at TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup

Malone coach looks to lead America to first team title since 2005

NORMAN, Okla. – Ken Hyland - head men’s golf coach at Malone - will coach the United States at this summer’s the TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup supported by JAL at Chukyo Golf Club’s Ishino Course. The United States - which is sponsored by the Acushnet Company - has won the tournament five times since its inception in 1992 but has failed to claim the team title since 2005.

Hyland is in his 39th season of coaching men’s golf at Malone University (as of the spring of 2011) and has guided the Pioneers to tremendous success during his accomplished career. Under his direction Malone has captured 27 Conference/Region/District Titles, four NCCAA National Championships (1999, 2000, 2004, 2008), and one NAIA National Title (2000).

2010 was no exception as Hyland led the Pioneers to their seventh straight American Mideast Conference crown and a third-place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Hyland’s top golfer, junior Justin Lower, wrapped up an incredible year by winning an individual NAIA National Title to join Hyland as the only individual national champions in the history of the Malone golf program. Lower was also named the NAIA recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award as national player of the year. In recognition of his team’s incredible 2009-2010 campaign, Hyland was voted by his peers as the 2010 NAIA National Coach of the Year.

Hyland graduated from Malone College in 1969 with a bachelors degree in history and physical education and received his master’s degree from the University of Akron in 1972. While a student at Malone, he became the school’s first All-American and first national champion when he captured medalist honors at the 1969 NAIA National Golf Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. Since graduation, he has won the Ohio Public Links Championship along with many local and club championships.

Hyland has been named to the NAIA Golf Hall of Fame (1977), the Malone Athletics Hall of Fame (1986), and the O.P.G.A. Golf Hall of Fame (1998), where he is presently serving as the association’s president.  Most recently, he was elected to the Cortland Lakeview High School Athletic Hall of Fame in December of 2010.

He has been named District 22, Mid-Ohio Conference, or American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year a remarkable 23 times and has coached 18 NAIA All-Americans and 68 All-District/All-Conference players. 2010 marked the second time that Hyland has earned the NAIA’s National Coach of the Year award as he also received the honor in 2000 after leading his team to its first-ever national golf championship. He has also garnered four NCCAA National Coach of the Year awards (following each of the Pioneers’ NCCAA National Titles) during his distinguished career.

In addition, Hyland guided the USA Golf Team to a World Championship and a gold medal in the World University Games played in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The competition, which follows a four-players-count-three scores format, will consist of four rounds played June 14-18. The TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup 2011 Supported by JAL is the world’s only junior golf championship in which national teams, winners of regional qualifiers held across 6 continents and participated by more than 60 national teams, compete for the world champion trophy.
