GCAA and The First Tee Start Spring in Los Angeles

NORMAN, Okla. - The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in a cooperative outreach initiative with The First Tee program held the fourth in a series of one-day events with The First Tee of Los Angeles and The First Tee of Pasadena on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Whittier Narrows Golf Course.  This event brought together collegiate players and their coaches with youngsters from The First Tee in an effort to promote involvement between college golf and the next generation of players in the game.  The Los Angeles and Pasadena chapters combined to bring together more than 75 participants from the ages of 9-17.  The four-hour event was broken down into four rotating stations which included a wellness discussion, long game, short game and putting instruction for all participants.  College coaches and players conducted a question-and-answer session with each group as well as one-on-one instruction at each station.  Consistent with the GCAA initiative on skin cancer prevention with the Sun SafeTee organization (www.sunsafetee.org ), educational materials were passed out to all participants and a discussion with a resident dermatologist and the participants followed.

Four universities and colleges, including Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Southern California and UCLA, were represented in the 25-plus coaches and players in attendance.

"The GCAA very much appreciates the efforts by everyone involved with The First Tee chapters from the greater LA area,” said GCAA CEO Gregg Grost.  "The enthusiastic participation by The First Tee participants, volunteers, student athletes and coaches all contributed to making this such a special event.  It was especially gratifying for the GCAA national office staff to see the efforts made by all involved given the fact that the original date for the event had to be rescheduled due to the very unlikely occurrence of bad weather in Southern California.”

The final four 2011 spring event dates will be announced in the coming weeks. For more information please contact Megan Goodwin, GCAA Director of Membership Services and Outreach, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
