Florida Stays No. 1 in Precept Coaches Poll
NORMAN, Okla. ? For the second straight ranking, Florida earned the top spot in the Division I Precept Coaches Poll, narrowly edging second-ranked UCLA. The Gators earned three more points than the Bruins - 668-665 - despite UCLA capturing 16 first-place votes to Florida?s nine. Preseason No. 1 and defending national champion Clemson came in third with the three remaining first-place votes and trail Florida by only 10 points.
Georgia jumped four spots to fourth and TCU climbed two rungs to fifth. Arizona State dropped a spot to sixth while Oklahoma State and Texas fell to seventh and eighth, respectively. Georgia Tech and Augusta State both reentered the top 10 at Nos. 9 and 10.
Wake Forest and UNLV, who were tied for ninth in the last poll, tumbled to Nos. 11 and 12, respectively. Southern California fell two spots to 13th while North Carolina moved up to No. 14. New Mexico stayed at No. 15 and was followed by Washington, Arizona and Oklahoma. Minnesota made the biggest jump, climbing from No. 24 to 19. Duke moved up to No. 20
Arkansas stood pat at No. 21 and is followed by NC State and South Carolina. Georgia Southern checks in for the first time this season at No. 24. Auburn took the biggest fall in the poll, dropping from No. 20 to 25.
California dropped from the rankings.
The Precept Coaches poll is voted on by a panel of head coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the Golf Coaches Association of America. The next Division I Precept Coaches poll will be released Oct. 22.
