NORMAN, Okla. ? Columbus State captured three first-place votes and 226 points to edge Florida Southern - who also had three-place ballots - by six points in the first GCAA/Bridgestone Division II Coaches Poll of the season. Three-time defending national champion South Carolina-Aiken had held the top spot in the poll since the final poll of the 2004 season but fell to seventh - despite two first-place votes.
Armstrong Atlantic came in at No. 3 and was followed by West Florida and Western Washington. Sixth-ranked Valdosta State claimed the final three first-place votes. Lynn, Cal. State-Stanislaus and Barry filled spots 8-10.
Rollins checked in at No. 11 and is followed by USC-Upstate, Chico State, Nova Southeastern, Belmont Abbey, Cameron, St. Edward?s, Pfeiffer, Georgia Coll. & State Univ. and North Alabama. Central Oklahoma was ranked No. 21 while Grand Canyon, Sonoma State and Eckerd ranked 22-24.
Abilene Christian, Cal. State-San Bernardino, Northeastern State and Presbyterian all tied at No. 25.
The GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll is voted on by a panel of head coaches at Division II institutions. All are members of the Golf Coaches Association of America. The next GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll will be released Oct. 26.
