GCAA Names 2008 International Team Coaches
Ray, Stobs and White to lead U.S. squads
NORMAN, Okla. ? Conrad Ray of Stanford, Barry?s Jimmy Stobs and Brian White of Lamar have been selected as its 2008 international team coaches announced the GCAA. Ray will lead the United States against Europe in the Palmer Cup presented by Monster at Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links, Stobs will coach in the Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship and White in the Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship.
A former Stanford golfer, Ray is currently in his fourth season at the helm of the Cardinal program. Last season he guided Stanford to its first national title since 1994. Ray, a member of that 1994 squad, is one of the elite few NCAA head coaches to have won an NCAA title as both an athlete and coach. Under Ray?s guidance, the Cardinal led wire-to-wire at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va. and claimed an eighth national title for the program. The 12-stroke victory capped an impressive season, during which the squad won seven tournaments and earned a No. 1 national ranking. All five Stanford golfers were named PING All-America selections at the conclusion of the season, the most to earn the honor in a single-season in program history. Additionally, the squad produced a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, three Pac-10 All-Academic honorees, five All-Conference selections, five PING All-Region selections and a GCAA All-Freshman selection. Ray was named the 2007 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, the Eaton Golf Pride Pacific Region Coach of the Year and the Dave Williams Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year following the 2007 campaign.
Stobs is in his sixth season at the helm of the Buccaneer men?s golf program. Last season, Stobs was named Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year after leading the Buccaneers to an unprecedented 121-35-5 tournament record and the 2007 NCAA Division II national title, the first in program history. The Buccaneers finished in the top-10 in all 12 of their tournaments with nine top-five finishes, five second-place finishes and one tournament win at the national championship. Hernan Borja became the first player in school history to earn PING First-Team All-America honors, while fellow seniors Nick Gillaspy and Juan Weissenberg earned PING Honorable Mention All-America. Borja also earned All-SSC and SSC All-Tournament honors, while Gillaspy was selected to the All-SSC team and Weissenberg to the SSC All-Tournament team. Weissenberg was also the first men?s golfer to earn both All-America and All-America Scholar honors in the same season.
White is in his eighth season associated with the Lamar golf program and second as the men?s head coach. He guided the Cardinals to their best performance at the Southland Conference Championship, a best-ever fourth place finish at the NCAA Central Regional and a school-best third place finish at NCAA Championship. The Cardinals? final round score of 5-under 275 was the best round of the day at the 2007 NCAA Championship, which was played at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., to vault from 12th to third place. Lamar placed five golfers on All-Southland Conference teams with Dawie Van Der Walt earning SLC player of the year honors. Van Der Walt was also named a PING First-Team All-American, becoming the first three-time All-American in school history. White also serves as head coach of the women?s program.
