Duke head coach recipient of honor presented to coach and PGA Professional


NORMAN, Okla. ?  Rod Myers, head men?s golf coach at Duke and member of the Carolinas PGA Section has been named the recipient of the Labron Harris Sr. Award presented by E-Z-GO in cooperation with The PGA of America announced the Golf Coaches Association of America.  The Harris Award is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and represents the finest qualities the game has to offer.

    ?It?s a great honor to be recognized as both a PGA member and a GCAA member,? said Myers.  ?I?m one of the few coaches that is old enough to have coached against Labron Harris and am fully aware of the contributions he made to the Game, not only as a member of the PGA, but primarily as a collegiate coach.  To win an award in his name is pretty special.?

    Myers is one of the mainstays of the Duke University athletics department and one of the nation?s most respected names in golf. Now in his 34th season with the Duke golf program, he has led the Blue Devils to the level where they are consistent contenders in both the ACC and on the national scene.  While at the helm of the Blue Devil program, Myers has coached 16 All-Americas, nine Academic All-Americas, 24 All-ACC selections and three ACC individual champions.  He has also guided the Blue Devils to 29 tournament wins and seven trips to the NCAA Championship.  In 2005, Myers was named Golfweek National Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year.  Before coming to Duke, he served as head coach at Ohio State and served as an assistant at Maryland.  Myers played collegiately at Ohio Wesleyan.

        Myers is a Master PGA Professional and has served on the staff of the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy. He is a member of the PGA Rules Committee and was formerly a member of the USGA Rules Committee. An active member of the PGA of America, Myers officiated at every Masters Championship from 1995-2003. He is a former president and treasurer of the GCAA and a former chairman of the NCAA Golf Committee.

        Myers was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame in 1986.
