The Farms Golf Club to Host Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship
Event with new format will be played March 22-24, 2009

NORMAN, Okla.  ?  The Farms Golf Club will host the 2009 Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship announced the Golf Coaches Association of America. The event - previously staged during the fall season - will be played March 22-24 and feature a new format taking into account proposed changes to the Division I championships.

?Callaway Golf is happy to once again sponsor the Collegiate Match Play Championship,? said Callaway Golf Collegiate Representative Jeff Harris. "We're pleased that the event is making its first trip out west at a very special venue in The Farms Golf Club. We're also excited to give competing teams an opportunity to play an event which will simulate proposed changes at the NCAA Championships."

Built in 1988 in the ruggedly beautiful terrain of Rancho Santa Fe, one of San Diego?s most prestigious communities, The Farms Golf Club is a par 72, 6,911-yard layout. Originally designed by Pete, Perry and Alice Dye with assistance from golfing great, Tommy Jacobs, The Farms golf course was recently remodeled under the guidance of golf course architect John Fought and his associate, PGA tour professional Tom Lehman.  Opened for play in October of 2000, the course renovations received enthusiastic approval from the club's membership.

With modifications designed to improve the playability and maintainability of the course, changes included newly reconstructed and recontoured bent grass putting greens that allow for more undulation and additional hole locations; new teeing areas and bunkering that test a player?s ability to visualize and execute the proper shot; a state-of-the-art irrigation system, and a wonderful practice facility featuring a double-ended driving range, complete with target greens and bunkers.

"The Farms Golf Club, located in Rancho Santa Fe, California, is exited to be the host venue for the 2009 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship," said The Farms general manager Bruce Bennetts.  "The Board of Directors and members of the Farms Golf Club are proud to be able to provide their course for this premier event, and promise to provide a superior test of golf for the outstanding golf teams participating in the competition."

Originally conceived as a true match play event, the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship will now contain both a medal and match play component. The 16 participating teams will play 36 holes of stroke play during the first day of competition. The top eight finishers will then advance to a championship match play bracket while finishers nine through 16 will be placed in a consolation bracket. Each team will play three rounds of match play over the next two days. The match play portion will reflect the proposed format of the NCAA Championships.

?After speaking with many member coaches over the last several months, we feel this format will most benefit those teams that will be competing at the NCAA Championships,? said GCAA President John Fields. "It will contain a cut - just like the proposed change for the championships - and will give teams a chance to play the same match play format that we are likely to see at the finals. It's a great opportunity for our players to experience it before our most important tournament of the year."
